The PirateNurse race is an annual, certified 5K that draws runners from across the state. The race got its start in 2013 when the ECU College of Nursing Student Leadership Council brought the event idea to faculty advisors. They planned that the original race proceeds would help fund the ECU College of Nursing General Scholarship Fund and the Linda Pynn Nurse Practitioner Scholarship Fund, both of which provide financial support for nursing student education. The Linda Pynn Fund has since become fully endowed, so the race proceeds now provide much-needed support for the ECU College of Nursing General Scholarship Fund. Those scholarships are awarded to by the College's Scholarship Committee to nursing students and are presented by the dean of the College of Nursing during our annual scholarship ceremony.
Exceeding the expectations of the Student Leadership Council, the PirateNurse 5K has become a popular legacy event for current students. It's also a welcome opportunity for alumni to come back, visit the campus and re-connect. In concert with nursing culture, the charitable aspect of the event is integral to the ideal of service, one of the hallmarks of nursing education at the ECU College of Nursing.
The custom 5K race course, which traverses the ECU Health Sciences Campus, was laid out and certified with help from "Run the East". (You can download a course map here:
http://www.ecu.edu/nursing/customcf/downloads/PirateNurse5K/PirateNurse5K_map.pdf). Founded by Greenville resident James Orr in 2010, "Run the East" is an experienced race hosting company and a leading provider of professional racing events in North Carolina. "Run the East" manages the technical and logistical aspects of the PirateNurse 5K, including electronic timing chips for official timing results. The PirateNurse 5K race is listed on the Run the East website (
http://www.runtheeast.com), and the race results are collected and displayed there, as well as numerous other race events and results from across the state.
We also conduct a Kid's Fun Run, which is held just prior to the adult race. The Kids' Fun Run is free, but we do ask that you
register each child participant.
Saturday, April 6th, 2019 will mark the 6th annual Pirate Nurse 5K on the ECU Health Sciences Campus. We strongly encourage all runners to preregister/prepay for the race at our secure, PirateNurse 5K online store

All racers will be required to sign a race waiver. Kid's Fun Run participants will need a waiver signed by their parent/sponsor. You can download a waiver here:
