CASTL (Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning)

The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) seeks to enhance student learning and encourage more effective instruction in higher education through the systematic study of teaching and learning, documented in a public forum where it is available for peer review and criticism, that can be used as the foundation for future scholarship by others. The scholarship of teaching and learning differs from the scholarly teaching required of all faculty that involves a knowledge of content and the ability to teach it. Many ECU faculty are already engaged in a variety of teaching and research activities that fall within the realm of the scholarship of teaching and learning.

The UNC System including East Carolina University was selected to participate in a three-year CASTL Project, as part of the CASTL Institutional Leadership Program developed by the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning to improve undergraduate and graduate education. The 87 higher education institutions or networks of institutions chosen for the program have exhibited a strong commitment to the developing and sustaining a scholarship of teaching and learning and have the ability to influence work in areas ranging from assessment and accountability to undergraduate research.

The program utilizes a series of CASTL Campus Program Leadership Clusters; for a complete list see The UNC system belongs to a "cluster" that also includes the City University of New York, Miami Dade College, the University of Colorado System, and the University of Wisconsin System (coordinating institution). The theme for this cluster is, "System-wide Collaboration Supporting the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning."

The UNC CASTL initiative also partnered with the UNC Teaching and Learning with Technology Collaborative (TLTC) to promote large enrollment course redesign efforts as promoted by the National Center for Academic Transformation.
