Interdisciplinary Health Career Scholars

The Interdisciplinary Health Career Scholars program is an opportunity for minority youths to explore a health career of their choosing through a 10-week immersion experience in their local community. The goal of the internship is to expose students to different health careers that would encourage them to pursue the profession.

This workplace experience allows students and preceptors to form a team, with a health professional serving as a mentor to the intern. Students will shadow the health professionals during the internship and be responsible for all activities assigned to them. This experience will allow them to explore their likes and dislikes of their chosen health career while gaining hands on clinical experience. In addition, interns will attain skills in the areas of professionalism, communication skills and workplace etiquette while gaining insight into the dynamics of the employee- employer relationship.

The internship experience is a win-win situation for the students and community agency participants. Local communities and interns have a vested interest in working collaboratively in the internship. Communities are training these students by preparing them for the local workforce while interns are gaining valuable experience as an apprentice within a health profession.  In addition, interns are paid a stipend for their participation in the summer internship.
