December
1, 2006
In
December, ECU-AFS
hosted its eighth annual banquet. Over
50 people attended this event to enjoy a
poster
session and happy
hour, a catered meal, and a slideshow of ECU-AFS 2006 events. Special music was provided
by Chad Smith,
past president of ECU-AFS. Guests
included fishery professionals, students, ECU alumni (including three
past
presidents of ECU-AFS and the president of the ECU-AFS predecessor
organization), ECU administrators, and AFS
members from the Southern
Division and the Tidewater Chapter.
Invited speakers included
Anthony Overton (Tidewater
Chapter President) and Bob Curry (Southern
Division
President). Our guest speaker was Dr.
Charles “Pete” Peterson,
Alumni Distinguished Professor of Marine
Sciences, Biology, and Ecology at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill.
Dr. Peterson gave a talk entitled, "Historical
Baselines of Estuaries: How historical overfishing set the table
for today's
ecosystem shifts by eutrophication." Dr. Peterson was
especially generous to ECU-AFS by stepping in after our initial
guest
speaker, Dr. Grant Gilmore, had to cancel at the last minute.
Many compliments were received on the event,
and several guests offered
to speak at upcoming monthly meetings.
