 CHAD SMITH - PRESIDENT

Chad Smith completed a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from East Carolina University in the Spring of 2002
with a concentration in ecology and marine biology.  He is currently a graduate student in the Department of Biology
and is studying habitat utilization of anadromous fishes in Tar River, North Carolina.  He also teaches Environmental
Biology for non-majors and Ecology labs.  Other interests include:  piano; composing and recording music; photography;
cinematography; web-design; world-traveling; cultural activities; road racing and graphic design.  Accomplishments
include:  Eagle Scout (1996) and John Philip Sousa Band Award (1998) and participation in various charity organizations
and volunteer services such as Habitat for Humanity and American Red Cross.

INGRID COULSON - VICE PRESIDENT

Ingrid Coulson, a senior at East Carolina University, expects to graduate in December 2005 with
a Bachelor of Science in biology.  She hopes to further her education by going on to receive a Master's Degree. 
She spends most of her free time outdoors and loves to swim!

 JACQUI JENKINS- SECRETARY 

Jacqui Jenkins completed a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of British Columbia in 2000,
with a concentration in biology and oceanography.  Before beginning a Master’s Degree at ECU in 2003,
she worked as a Habitat Biologist with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and as a Fisheries
Technician at NC State University.  Interested in predator-prey dynamics, she is currently studying the feeding
habits of juvenile fishes at Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary, located off the coast of Georgia, USA.

HEIDI ALDERMAN - TREASURER

Heidi graduated summa cum laude from Northeastern Illinois University in 1994.
She has been a law enforcement ranger and resource technician for the National Park
Service; a high school science teacher; a wildlife biologist’s assistant for the State of
West Virginia; and raptor caretaker at two nature centers. Heidi is currently investigating
the mercury accumulation in osprey due to diet selection at an area lake, teaching introductory
biology labs, treasurer for the ECU AFS chapter, and Mom to one.  Heidi  expects to achieve
her Master's Degree in December of 2004.

STEPHEN HUGHES and ELIZABETH LOCKHART - CO-HISTORIANS

Stephen is working on his Bachelor of Science in biology and has a high interest in Hatchery Management
from his involvement at Carolina Classics Catfish farm.

Elizabeth (Liz) is also working on her Bachelor of Science in biology from East Carolina University.

Research Activity   

Anadromous fish species --Life history aspects, behavior, reproduction, migration, feeding habits,
bycatch, habitat utilization, resource management.

Key species are striped bass, American shad, hickory shad, alewife, and blueback herring.
Penaeid Shrimp --behavior, bycatch.

Power Production effects on habitat utilization --Tidal power (Canada), fossil fuel
(Hudson River, nuclear (New York, North Carolina), lowhead hydro dams (North Carolina).

Commercial fishing/gear development --purse netters (menhaden), gill netters (striped bass, alosids),
shrimp trawling (bycatch), skimmer trawls (gear development).

Director, Field Station for Coastal Studies at Mattamuskeet, an ECU multi-disciplinary field station located in
Hyde County within the Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge on the Albemarle-Pamlico peninsula.
