Honors: ECU-AFS Faculty
Member, Dr. Anthony Overton, was inducted as Tidewater Chapter
President.
Dr.
Anthony Overton, an ECU-AFS faculty member, was elected the next
President of the Tidewater Chapter. As such, he and
his
organizing
committee were responsible for convening the annual Tidewater
Meeting.
Dr. Overton called upon ECU-AFS to assist
with registrations, abstract
submissions, various meeting logistics, and to host a special event on
the welcoming evening. ECU-AFS
chose to sponsor the first ever
"Beer
on the Pier" fishing tournament, which proved to be quite challenging
in late January. Unfortunately,
the tournament site (the hotel
pier)
had been crippled by Hurricane Ophelia, causing us to fish much closer
to shore than we had expected.
The tide was out and the
temperature
was brisk, but enthusiasm and adult beverages seemed to warm the
group. We really had a great
turn-out, and several fish were
landed
(although we suspect some of them might have been recaptures).
Fishing
tournament awards were given
out at the banquet the following night,
featuring highly-sought after prizes for largest fish, smallest fish,
most fish, the best male and
female anglers, transparent fish, new
species and for the fisherman who acutally caught himself. In
addition, 13 students and three faculty
ECU-AFS members attended the
meeting. Six members gave oral presentations of their thesis
research, and two members presented
posters. Jason Clermont won
third prize in the "Best Poster" category. Dr. Overton was
inducted as the Tidewater Chapter President.
All in all, ECU-AFS
made a strong showing in tems of academic research and event
facilitation. ECU-AFS
would like to thank the
ECU
Department of Biology who provided partial funding for 13 student
members to attend this meeting. Additional "thanks"
goes to
ECU-AFS President, Dee Dee Barry, who worked hard, and patiently, to
organize funding and student registration.
