Good poetry has discernible qualities.
It makes maximum use of figurative language,
and what is said emerges from the drama of the imagery.
What it says has a greater impact because it emerges subtly,
rather than in the form of direct statements. - Peter Makuck

The figure
a poem makes...
It begins in delight
and ends in wisdom.
~ Robert Frost
The poem may embody
perception so luminous
it seems truth, but
what keeps it alive
is not fixed discovery,
but the means of discovery;
what it keeps alive
is intelligence.
~ Louise Glück
Poetry
recycles things,
takes ordinary things
and makes them
into art.
