The Doctoral Program in Physiology at East Carolina University trains students in physiological processes underlying organism function. The Program is designed to provide a broad theoretical and empirical knowledge base, thereby positioning students to take advantage of diverse career opportunities. The low student to faculty ratio (13 students : 13 faculty members) insures students have direct access to professors. Opportunities for employment with a terminal degree in physiology are numerous and varied. Graduates of the Doctoral Program in Physiology at East Carolina University are currently employed at colleges and universities, private foundations, government laboratories, and private industry. The core curriculum establishes a high level of understanding in molecular, cellular, and organ systems. Emphasis is placed on the integration of these systems in living organisms. Electives, focused review of the literature, and laboratory research experiences allow students to develop expertise in specific areas of interest and acquire the analytical skills necessary to address unanswered questions. Ability to convey ideas –- to teach and/or present research findings –- is emphasized throughout the Program. |

Students in the degree program will normally remain in residence for between four and five years. During the first two years, students take courses in Biochemistry, Molecular Cell Biology, Cell Physiology, Organ Systems Physiology, Pathophysiology, Physiological Genomics, Statistics, and Computer Science as well as electives. Normally didactic course work will be completed by the end of the second year. The final two years of the program are devoted to full time research in biomedical sciences. Additionally, during this period the student will be provided with the opportunity to teach Physiology to undergraduate students at the East Carolina University School of Allied Health Sciences. Diverse options for student research exist in Cardiac, Pulmonary, Neuro-, Gastrointestinal, and Renal Physiology. |

Graduate students presently receive a fellowship that provides $18,135 per year. This level of support is contingent upon maintenance of good academic standing and progress toward degree. Students who are not residents of the state of North Carolina receive a $9,000 tuition remission for out of state tuition. The cost of in state tuition (approximately $1100 per semester) is reimbursed to all students. Additionally, up to $770 per year will be reimbursed for health insurance obtained by the student. |
