The Physiology department offers a doctoral degree in the Physiological sciences. On average the department supports six to eight resident graduate students in it's degree program. The majority of modern physiologists are involved in academic research and teaching. With this in mind, the program at East Carolina provides graduate student education with a dual emphasis. Here training in basic research is coupled with training designed to help the student develop both skills as a teacher and skills in the presentation of scientific data. Opportunities for employment with a terminal degree in physiology are numerous and varied. Today positions for Physiologists occur over a large spectrum of the educational and industrial environments including universities, government facilities and private industry. |

Students in the degree program will normally remain in residence for between four and five years. In addition to the student’s research for dissertation, a normal course load will include basic classes in Biochemistry, Molecular Cell Biology, Histology, Neuroanatomy, Statistics and Computer Science. Both basic and advanced courses in Physiology will be taken. Normally didactic course work will be completed by the end of the second year. The final two years of the program are devoted to full time research in biomedical sciences. Additionally, during this period the student will be provided with the opportunity to teach Physiology to undergraduate students at the East Carolina University School of Allied Health Sciences. |

Graduate students presently receive a fellowship that provides $18,135 per year. This level of support is contingent upon maintenance of good academic standing and progress toward degree. Students who are not residents of the state of North Carolina receive a $9,000 tuition remission for out of state tuition. The cost of in state tuition (approximately $1100 per semester) is reimbursed to all students. Additionally, up to $770 per year will be reimbursed for health insurance obtained by the student. |
