Community Outreach

 

East Carolina University's mission includes serving as a national model for public service and regional transformation by (among others): "creating a strong, sustainable future for eastern North Carolina through education, research, innovation, investment, and outreach…"  The planning program continues to contribute to that mission with outreach efforts in the region involving faculty and students.


Old Waynesborough Park (Goldsboro, NC) (2012)

The Old Waynesboro Commission, Inc. in Goldsboro, which operates Old Waynesborough Park, contacted the program for assistance.  Jerry Weitz and some of his design and historic preservation students are preparing a master plan graphic for the park, an assessment of historic village expansion, and other park project proposals.

South Mills Small Area Plan, Camden County NC (2011-2012)

With funding from ECU's Office of Engagement, Innovation and Economic Development, certain students in Dr. Weitz's land use planning class (fall 2011) completed a small area plan for the South Mills core village.  The plan was presented to the Camden County Board of Commissioners in February 2012.

Greenville, NC Smart Growth Audit (2011)

Dr. Weitz's planning studio class in 2011 prepared a smart growth audit of the city's Horizons comprehensive plan and land development regulations.

Town of Hookerton (2011)

In 2010, The Town of Hookerton requested outreach assistance from the program. Various outreach efforts were completed in 2011, including a redrafting of the town’s zoning map, a program for GIS development, land use and zoning recommendations, analysis of heritage tourism potential, and park and recreation planning.

Edgecombe County, NC (2011)

With funding from the state via ECU’s Office of Engagement, Innovation and Economic Development, the planning program was hired to prepare a housing needs assessment and a feasibility study for initiating an industrial speculative building program.

Mid-East Commission (Region Q) (2010)

During Fall Semester 2010, Dr. Weitz’s planning studio class assisted the Mid-East Commission with background research in support of updating its comprehensive economic development strategy.
