Department of Political Science

New Initiatives
The Political Science Department at ECU is excited to be offering a number of new programs for students, alumni, and others in our community. Whether it's local high school students interested in exploring International Diplomacy through our Model UN program, or senior citizens desiring to stay current on topics related to U.S. Foreign Policy through our Great Decisions or World Affairs Council, ECU is taking the lead for community engagement and development, expanding learning outside of the classroom and into the local community and beyond.

As of the fall of 2004, we offer a new Graduate Certificate in Security Studies. This is an interdisciplinary program, comprised of course offerings from Political Science, Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Environmental Health, and Emergency Planning, among others. This program will appeal to those working full-time, through its Distance Education option, as well as full-time graduate students interested in using their education in security-related career fields. Security Studies Program
ECU offers an interdisciplinary program in Security Studies. The program currently offered includes a 15 semester hour graduate certificate and a 24 hour undergraduate minor. Planning is underway for a Masters in Security Studies degree program, which will be completely available via distance learning.

Model UN
Our department has been quite active for the past few years in this popular high school and college program.

Great Decisions
This spring 2006, ECU will again be hosting the Foreign Policy Association's Great Decisions program. This series of lectures on topics related to Foreign Policy, International Relations, and National Security, will run 8 consecutive weeks on Saturday mornings. It is open to the public for a small enrollment fee, which includes the Great Decisions text book. Experts in their fields will provide presentations each week on the topics selected by the Foreign Policy Association. Teachers can also earn continuing education credit for attendance.

World Affairs Council
At ECU, we joined with members of our local community to form a local chapter of the World Affairs Council here in Greenville, which was incorporated in January 2006. These Councils exist throughout the United States and serve as an opportunity to increase community involvement in global issues, to include running a Speakers Bureau to bring in well-known national and international figures to speak on topics related to International Affairs, as well as hosting International Visitor Exchanges. Further information on the new World Affairs Council of Eastern North Carolina can be found here.
