DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE

NEW FACULTY PROFILES

Dr. Joseph Gershtenson and Dr. Patricia Mitchell

Welcome!

  • Dr. Joseph Gershtenson is teaching American government and the American executive. Dr. Gershtenson attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he received a bachelor of science in Foreign Service. Dr. Gershtenson says the best experience he had at Georgetown was meeting his wife of eight years, Jennifer. After Georgetown he traveled to California and completed a masters degree in Pacific international affairs at the University of California at San Diego. While waiting for his wife to complete her teaching credentials in bi-lingual education, Dr. Gershtenson was employed as a substitute teacher at the elementary school level. Next, the Golden, Colorado, native found himself at the University of Texas working toward a doctorate in government with an emphasis on American politics and additional fields in methodology and political behavior. In his spare time he enjoys working on the new house that he and his wife recently purchased,  maintaining his fish aquariums, and of course, playing with his three children, ages five, four and eighteen months.

  • Dr. Patricia Mitchell is teaching state and local government, politics and public management, and budgeting.  Originally from Michigan,  Dr. Mitchell received her BA in English from Berry College in Rome, Georgia, and her master of public administration from the University of Georgia. Before working toward a doctorate in public administration, also at the University of Georgia, she worked as a financial manager for a large Methodist church in Duluth, Georgia. She was also elected to a four-year term on the Gwinnett County School Board and directed a leadership program for educators. Dr. Mitchell successfully defended her dissertation entitled " Impact Fees as Revenue Enhancement in Florida County Budgets" in September 2001. A former antique dealer, Dr. Mitchell likes to visit area antique shops. Her son is a civil litigation attorney in Atlanta and was recently married in August of 2001. Her daughter lives in Augusta, Georgia with her husband and is as a pediatric intensive care nurse.
