The 2001-2002 academic year saw Pi Sigma Alpha's membership grow to its largest size and, a dramatic increase in its activites as well. Under the leadership of President Jason Lowry, Vice President Cate McCanless, and Secretary-Treasurer Holly Carraway, the society planned new events to build upon the activities from last year.  Pi Sigma Alpha hosted its second Careers in Political Science Day, featuring guest speakers from the university, law schools, and the professional community. In the spring semester, Pi Sigma Alpha visited Washington, D.C., meeting with elected officials and touring the Holocaust Museum and the Supreme Court.
The
2002-2003 academic year started off on a promising note as well. Pi Sigma Alpha played an instrumental role in

bringing U.S. Senate candidates Elizabeth Dole and Erskine Bowles to East Carolina for a nationally televised debate. The honor society co-sponsored a judicial forum for the 2002 judicial elections in late October, and plans another Career Day in the spring..

Model United Nations

The East Carolina Model United Nations Club participated in three collegiate conferences.  These included the National College Security Conference hosted by Georgetown University, the Model Security Council and ICJ Conference hosted by Appalachian State University, and the thirteenth Annual NCCIIE Conference hosted by Winston-Salem State University.  The club brought home eight awards including, our first Best Overall Delegation.  This year the club has revised its conference schedule and plans to look at many other options.  Those already identified include the Carolina's Conference hosted by UNC-Charlotte and the Southern Regional Model United Nations Conference hosted by UNA-USA.
The club's other major activity is the East Carolina High School  Nations Conference.

During the fourth annual conference, ECU hosted eighteen schools from across eastern North Carolina.  This conference was a breakthrough in that we attracted schools from the Research Triangle area for the first time, as well as our first school from Virginia making the conference officially bi-state.  This year we are expecting two additional  schools from Virginia, as well as participation from schools in Raleigh, Chapel Hill, and the Charlotte Mecklenburg County area.  The conference continues to grow with the support of the Department of Political Science, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Eastern Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
To provide  long-term support  for the Model UN, we have recently established the Stephen Keller Fund for the Model United

Nations.  The fund is named for Stephen Keller, a political science student from Sanford who was killed  in a car accident last year just before the high school conference. The Model UN Club established this fund with the help of his parents.  The goal is to endow the fund with $40,000 to provide the club with $2,000 per year for the high school conference and the club's travel to collegiate conferences.  If interested in contributing, please contact Dr. Dan Masters, faculty coordinator, or send your tax-deductible check to Stephen Keller Model UN Fund c/o the Department of Political Science, ECU, Greenville, N.C. 27858-4353.
