Admission to the School Psychology Program

»Program News

Students are admitted to the MA/CAS program with the understanding that they will pursue both degrees simultaneously, as the MA degree is not granted unless the requirements for the CAS degree have also been met. Admission to the program is contingent upon meeting all requirements of the ECU Graduate School and being recommended by the faculty of the School Psychology graduate program. All prospective graduate students should have a common core of undergraduate psychology courses including introductory psychology, statistics, and research methods. Students who have an MA in school psychology may be considered for admission to the CAS program without completing the MA at ECU. Applicants with a masters degree in a related area will have to apply for and complete the entire MA/CAS program. The sequential scheduling of courses and practica makes part-time enrollment difficult. Moreover, students miss out on the the support of an intact group of students as they move through the program. Therefore, the program admits students for full-time Fall Semester enrollment only.

GRE scores, grade point average, references and other information are used in making admission decisions. Students accepted in the program typically have a combined GRE verbal and quantitative score of 1000 or higher and a cumulative GPA above 3.0. An important part of our admissions consideration is your Statement of Personal Goals. From this we are able to judge whether your interests are compatible with our program, and we can view a sample your writing skill. Please be sure to put a reasonable amount of effort into constructing your Statement of Personal Goals. Tell us why you want to be a school psychologist, what your career goals are, what personal characteristics and life experiences might make you a good psychologist, and why you want to come to ECU.

A completed application includes:

  • Completed Graduate School application which includes
    • your background informaion,
    • the application fee,
    • three letters of recommendation (at least two of which must be from a psychologist),
    • a statement of purpose,
    • GRE scores,
    • and transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended;
  • Completed Department of Psychology Supplemental Application;

Completed applications must be received by February 1 to ensure consideration for admission, although admissions decisions may begin before this deadline. Admission is for the fall semester only. Applicants will be notified about their admission status no later than April 1.

  1. Your background information,
  2. the application fee,
  3. three (3) letters of reference in support of you application,
  4. a statement of purpose,
  5. GRE scores,

**Please note that transfer credits posted on your transcript - even if only for a single course or college credit awarded while you were in high school - are not accepted in lieu of an official transcript from the institution that awarded the credit.

****Please note that you will not have access to the areas of the Graduate School Application that allow you to upload your statement of purpose and CV or to input the email addresses of those who are writing your letters of reference until your application fee has been processed. Once your fee has been processed those areas will become available for your use and you can complete your application.

This application is a required portion of your application, and if it is not completed, your application may not be reviewed. To complete the application, you will need access to your college transcript(s), GRE scores for every time you have taken it, and an electronic version of your "statement of purpose" so that you can paste it into the application.
