Overview of Graduate Programs

The Psychology Department offers the following degree programs:

The PhD program is a five-year program and includes a predoctoral internship. The MA/CAS School Psychology program is a three-year program and the Clinical and General Psychology programs are two-year programs. Only the Academic Psychology Program can be completed by distance education delivery mode. The doctoral program admits 6-8 students each year, while the master's programs typically accept between 8 and 12 students each year. Although fiinancial aid is not guaranteed, it is often available in the form of graduate assistantships. More than 80 percent of students accepted receive some form of assistantship.  

Acceptance into each program is usually made for the Fall Semester. Doctoral program applications for Fall 2008 are now being accepted. January 15 is the application deadline. Application deadline is March 1 for all non-doctoral programs. While each program has specific application requirements, all programs require:

  • a transcript of current undergraduate coursework, 
  • GRE Verbal, Quantitative, & Analytical Scores, 
  •  three letters of recommendation, two of which should be from psychologists
  • an ECU Graduate School Application,
  • and the Psychology Department Supplemental Application form (this form can be completed on line or downloaded from links at left).
Minimal credentials for acceptance into the doctoral program is 3.25 GPA and a combined GRE score (V + Q) of 1100. Minimum credentials for the non-doctoral programs are a 2.95 Grade Point Average overall and a combined GRE (V+Q+A) score of 1500 with no individual score lower than 450.
