Student Awards and Scholarships



Thanks to the generosity of alumni and friends of the Department of Psychology, a number of scholarships are available for students who are majoring in psychology.  Scholarships are competitive and each have separate eligibility requirements and require individual applications.


Here are descriptions of the currently available scholarships for graduate and undergraduate students. Unless otherwise specified students may nominate themselves or may be nominated by a faculty member in the Department of Psychology. Selection of the recipients are made by the Faculty Development and Awards Committee of the Department of Psychology unless otherwise indicated in the description of the scholarship.

Undergraduate Awards

Outstanding Senior Award. The ECU Student Government Association Outstanding Senior Award is given to a senior in each of the departments and schools.  The recipient receives a plaque from the ECU SGA, which is presented at the Psychology Graduate Recognition Ceremony. Spring 2008 Nominations due March 15, 2008.

Undergraduate Scholarships

The Earl and Norma Childers Scholarship. This merit-based scholarship is awarded to a psychology major with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a demonstrated commitment to a career in psychology. The scholarship is typically valued at $300* ($150 per semester toward tuition and fees). Spring 2008 applications due April 1, 2008.

The Miller-Moore Undergraduate Scholarship in Psychology. This merit and need-based scholarship is awarded to a rising senior psychology major who has demonstrated academic excellence in the field of psychology and has a demonstrated financial need.  The award is valued at $2000* to be applied to tuition and fees for the senior year. Spring 2008 applications due April 1, 2008.

The University Book Exchange Scholarship in Psychology. This merit-based scholarship is awarded to a rising senior who has shown academic excellence in the field of psychology.  The award is valued at $500* ($250 per semester to be applied to tuition and fees). Spring 2008 applications due April 1, 2008.

The Psychology Foundation Account Award. This $250* award will be made to the senior psychology major who produces the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Thesis.  Awards will be given at the fall and at the spring recognition ceremonies.  Nominations must be made by the student’s thesis advisor. Spring 2008 Nominations due May 1, 2008.

The Carol Smith Ripley Scholarship. This merit-based scholarship is awarded to a rising senior with a commitment to the study of psychology who plans to pursue a career in the field.  Preference will be given to those applicants who are planning a career in psychological research.  Nominations must be from a faculty member that has worked with the student on a research project or as a co-presenter of a research paper.  This scholarship is typically valued at $500* credited toward tuition and fees. Spring 2008 applications due April 1, 2008.


Graduate Student Scholarships

The Miller-Moore Graduate Scholarship in Psychology. This scholarship is awarded to the outstanding incoming student in the Clinical Behavioral Medicine PhD Program.  It is valued at $4,500* to be applied to tuition and fees. Selected by the PhD Program Admissions Committee.

The Larry E. and Ruth P. Willis I/O Psychology Fellowship. This scholarship is awarded to the outstanding student (either an incoming student or a second-year student) in the I/O program.  It is valued at $1,000* and is to be applied to be applied to tuition and fees.Selected by the Industrial/Organizational Program Faculty.

Patricia Jane Clarke Endrikat Memorial Graduate Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student in the School Psychology MA/CAS Program who plans to practice in a public school system following graduation.  It is valued at $2,500* to be applied to tuition and fee costs. This scholarships is open to students who self-nominate. Selected by the School Psychology Program Faculty.


*Dollar values on all scholarships may vary as they are dependent upon the current balances in the specific scholarship fund at the time of the award.
