In support of the nationwide demand for radiation therapists, the Department of Radiation Oncology at East Carolina University (ECU) teamed up with Pitt Community College to sponsor a one year radiation therapy program since 1987. Currently the program accepts approximately 24 students per year. These students are educated and trained in state-of-art equipment including the newest Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) equipment.
Students must be graduates of an accredited radiotherapy program and eligible to sit for the AART radiotherapy exam at the time of enrollment. Students must hold a current CPR certification by the American Heart Association Level C or American Red Cross. Applications are accepted from September 1st to November 30th, and February 1st to April 30th. Students obtain their experience by rotating throughout clinical sites in Eastern North Carolina and Virginia. The experience and knowledge of graduating students from this program boasts national recognition. The graduating students are recruited nationally and state-wide, fulfilling a shortage of well-trained radiation therapists to assure patient treatments continue in a timely manner. General information for the program can be found on the Pitt Community College website.
