Hypofrationated IGRT is a new treatment modality for early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer that has being intensively investigated mainly in academic centers in the United States, the European Union, and Japan.
As an academic center, ECU Physicians Radiation Oncology is now offering this new promising treatment modality to inoperable patients by taking advantage of the Siemens Primatom's unique ability to visualize the tumor prior to each treatment. This allows us to make daily adjustments to the patient's position and minimize the chance of missing the tumor target.
In selected cases, we are able to deliver in 5 treatments what traditionally involves 30 or more treatments. The short treatment course, or hypofractionated course, delivers significantly higher tumor control than the conventional longer treatment. This promising treatment modality offers hope to early stage lung cancer patients who can not undergo or refuse surgery.
