Radiation treatments of tomorrow are available today at East Carolina University Radiation Oncology. Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) are now offered via the Siemens Primatom. The Primatom combines an ultra fast diagnostic quality CT scanner on rails with an ultra precise Linear Accelerator. Unlike other forms of IGRT, such as ultrasound based, Primatom Therapy can be employed anywhere in the body. The Primatom allows any tumor bed to be imaged with incredible clarity directly before therapy. This information is used to move the radiation treatment to exactly where it's needed. When combined with Intensity Modulated Therapy, more dose can be accurately delivered to the tumor and restricted to surrounding normal tissue allowing for the best outcomes possible.
The Primatom is one of many state-of-the-art devices and treatments proudly offered by the East Carolina University Radiation Oncology team. These treatments combined with the best in compassionate cancer care from a team approach-a team of in-house physicists and dosimetrists, certified radiation therapists, oncology nurses, social services and nutritionists working together with our radiation oncology physicians, each with extensive postgraduate specialty training- all dedicated to ensuring optimal cancer care.
