Roanoke Island Summer Events
Roanoke Island Summer Events Two important historically-related events are planned for Roanoke Island this summer. First, the 56th production season of Paul green's The Lost Colony opens June 6 and runs to August 23. Produced annually by the Roanoke Island Historical Association, the drama begins at 8:30 p.m. nightly except Saturday at the Waterside Theatre on the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site grounds in Manteo. Ticket information is available through The Lost Colony Box Office, 1409 Highway 64/264, Manteo, NC 27954; telephone (800)488-5012. A new event is also in the works for this summer. A group of Manteo residents has planned the First Annual Freedom Celebration for Sunday, June 23, at the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. The celebration will commemorate the African American Freedman's Colony established on Roanoke Island during the Civil War. The organizing committee is identifying as many of the colony's descendants as possible. Events will include a morning worship service, crafts, storytelling, a fish fry, and a "Celebration of Freedom" that features Patricia Click, who has written on the Freedman's Colony. For more information, contact The Raonoke Island Freedom Celebration, Route 1, Box 675, Manteo, NC 27954; telephone (919) 473-5772.
