Roanoke Colonies Research Newsletter
Notes on Recent Publications
H. G. Jones's North Carolina History: An Annotated Bibliography (Westport, CT: Greenwood, 1995) was somehow left off the 1995 checklist. Of particular interest is the section "Roanoke Colonies and Sir Walter Raleigh," while other sections cite works on North Carolina's natural history, on its Native Americans from prehistory onward, and on the region's exploration in general. William S. Powell's six volume Dictionary of North Carolina Biography (Chapel Hill: U of North Carolina P, 1979-1996) includes articles about several Roanoke colonization-related figures: one by Powell on Ananias, Eleanor, and Virginia Dare; four by David B. Quinn about Manteo, Sir Walter Raleigh, Wanchese, and John White; and four by John W. Shirley about Philip Amadas, Arthur Barlowe, Thomas Hariot, and Sir Ralph Lane. Finally, the Virginia Company Foundation has put out Nicholas Luccketti's Fort Raleigh Archaeological Project 1994/1995 Survey Report (Jamestown, VA: Virginia Company Foundation-Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, 1997) concerning work done at the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. Plans are in progress to make Luccketti's report widely available via the World Wide Web.
