Roanoke Island Colonization Conferences Planned
At its September 16, 1994, meeting, the Roanoke Colonies Research Office’s advisory committee suggested that plans be made for a spring 1998 major conference concerning Roanoke Island colonization and related subjects. Though exact dates have yet to be set, the conference will be held on the campus of East Carolina University with the possibility of planned excursions to Roanoke Island and other important sites in the region.
Of major concern to the advisory committee is that scholars be aware of the conference in hopes of encouraging new research and significant reinterpretations of older research to be ready for the conference. The ultimate aim is to publish the conference proceedings.
At the same meeting, the advisory committee suggested that the Roanoke Colonies Research Office also pursue the possibility of holding a mini-conference on current biographical research being done about figures connected with Roanoke colonization. Similar to the Fort Raleigh Shoreline Conference held in Manteo last December, the conference would be a one-day gathering on the ECU campus with presentations by four or five researchers and discussion of future avenues to explore. Tentatively, the mini-conference would be held in the late spring or early fall of 1995.
Anyone who is engaged in biographical research connected with the Roanoke Island colonization efforts and who would be interested in participating is asked to contact Tom Shields at the Roanoke Colonies Research Office. Please let Dr. Shields know whom you are researching, if you would be interested in making a presentation, and what dates you feel would be good for the mini-conference.
