Roanoke Colonies Research Newsletter
Volume 2.1 (November 1994)
From the Editor . . .
I want to thank several people for writing articles in this issue of the Roanoke Colonies Research Newsletter. Charles Ewen, a professor in East Carolina University’s Department of Anthropology, is a historical archaeologist who has done a great deal of work on sixteenth-century Spanish sites in Florida. Nicholas M. Luccketti is the executive director of the Virginia Company Foundation and is a senior archaeologist for the James River Institute for Archaeology. John Patterson is an instructor in ECU’s Department of Communications and served as an assistant editor for the first two issues of the Roanoke Colonies Research Newsletter. If you have an item to contribute to the newsletter, please send it to me at the address listed in the masthead.
Thanks also to Mary Moss Darden of Virginia Beach, Virginia, for her recent gifts of newspaper clippings, a copy of the 1937 Official Illustrated Booklet: 350th Anniversary of Sir Walter Raleigh’s Colony on Roanoke Island and the Birth of Virginia Dare, and a copy of the 1937 Lost Colony premier production’s souvenir program. Among the more interesting things to note in both the play program and the 350th anniversary celebration booklet are pictures of the reconstructed Fort Raleigh and “Citie of Raleigh” done as log cabins with thatched roofs. In addition to the pictures of the anachronistic log cabins, the play program indicates that the lead actors were mostly professionals who had done many WPA (Works Projects Administration) productions. Ms. Darden’s gift will help build the Roanoke Colonies Research Office’s collection of otherwise hard to find items connected with the sixteenthcentury Roanoke island colonization efforts. Contributions to this small but growing collection are welcome.
The Roanoke Colonies Research Office is doing well after its first year with more than 130 people and institutions on the mailing list for the Roanoke Colonies Research Newsletter.
