English attempts at settlement in the Americas began during the 1580s on Roanoke Island along North Carolina's Outer Banks, but Roanoke Island's story of the late sixteenth century has to do with much more than just Virginia Dare and the "Lost Colony." Scholars throughout the world have completed interesting and important research related to the exploration and settlement of eastern North Carolina.
