English attempts at settlement in the Americas began during the 1580s on Roanoke Island along North Carolina's Outer Banks, but Roanoke Island's story of the late sixteenth century has to do with much more than just Virginia Dare and the "Lost Colony." Scholars throughout the world have completed interesting and important research related to the exploration and settlement of eastern North Carolina.

The Roanoke Colonies Research Office was created in 1993 as a clearinghouse for information related to all aspects of study regarding the Roanoke Colonies. Fields of study include areas such as anthropology, American studies, archaeology, biology, history, geography, literature, and Native American studies.

The Roanoke Colonies Research Office serves as a clearinghouse by becoming involved in a number of projects in several different areas. Some of these activities include:

• Publishing the annual Roanoke Colonies Research Newsletter. Organizing occasional conferences and bringing together scholars from various fields.
• Preparing checklists of materials concerning Roanoke Island colonization and related subjects.

The Roanoke Colonies Research Office is part of East Carolina University's Insitute for Historical and Cultural Research within the College of Arts and Sciences.
