The Capstone Studio

By matching talented students with eligible community organizations, the Capstone Studio allows students a unique and exciting bridge between the classroom and real life work while helping local communities find innovative ways of utilizing landmark buildings that have fallen into disrepair.

The Capstone Studio was created in 1999 after a major flood in areas surrounding East Carolina University. The studio has helped local civic organizations in Bath, Washington, Plymouth, Tarboro, and Greenville restore interiors and exteriors of buildings.

To qualify for assistance from the Capstone Studio, an organization must have:

  • A project addressing social or community needs
  • A project involving physical planning or interior restoration of an existing building
  • Sufficient resources to compensate for material costs

When a project is accepted by the studio, the sponsoring organization can receive:

  • Help with programming and planning their building
  • Drawings clearly describing desired improvements
  • Renderings capturing the nature of the project
  • Programming preliminary code and cost analysis

Since 1999, students of the Capstone Studio have not only facilitated improvements throughout the local area, they have inspired the community with innovative and creative ideas. These students are excited about the work they do and they want to contribute to the improvement of their environment. The Capstone Studio, the College of Human Ecology, and the Department of Interior Design and Merchandising encourage this excitement while offering affordable help to communities that need it.

Here are some examples of the work completed by students of the Capstone Studio:
