Outpatient I

Introduction
The Resident will attend the following clinics on a weekly basis: Amputee (AMP), Baclofen Pump Refill, General Rehabilitation (GR), Mild Brain Injury, Orthotics (ORTH) & Prosthetics, Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Lifecare (LTAC), other resident responsibilities as required by residency director and Faculty; and may choose, on a space available basis, to rotate in the following clinics: Equipment, Pain/Musculoskeletal, Peds Rehab, ,Sports Medicine. The resident will work 10 half days per week in approved clinics.
The Resident will assess, examine, and formulate a treatment plan for scheduled and add-on patients. This will include interviewing the patient and family or care giver and performing the physical examination. The clinic nurse's preliminary assessment and knowledge of the patient's and family's concerns and problems will be used by the resident maximal efficiency in the clinic. Cases will be discussed with the attending physician. Write a brief clinic note in the chart and dictating a complete clinic note. Complete various forms, letters of medical necessity, therapy orders, medication orders. Participate in outpatient team conferences, when appropriate. Assist with the education of junior residents, medical students, residents from outside PM&R Departments and Allied Health students when they are present in the clinic. The resident is expected to use available web based and computer resources to assist him/her in accomplishing the goals and objectives noted below.

Medical Knowledge
The resident will:
1. Advance personal medical knowledge gained in the relevant sections of the core competencies for the PGY-2, Sports Medicine, Pain/Musculoskeletal rotation core competencies
2. Develop a working knowledge of the theory behind and function of Baclofen pump systems.
3. Advance knowledge of the various orhtotics, prosthetics and other equipment introduced in the PGY-2, Sports Medicine, Pain/Musculoskeletal rotation core competencies

Patient Care
1. Obtain brief, as well as comprehensive, patient histories, in a timely fashion in the outpatient setting
2. Perform complete or focused physical examinations as indicated.
3. Select appropriate diagnostic studies in the evaluation of patients.
4. Determine the appropriate timing and dosage for Baclofen pumps
5. Advance patient care skills, in a more independent setting, gained in the relevant sections of the core competencies for the PGY-2, Sports Medicine, Pain/Musculoskeletal rotation core competencies

Interpersonal and Communication Skills
1. Present information to patients & other care team members in an effective manner.
2. Establish trust and maintain positive rapport with patients, caregivers & family members.
3. Demonstrate effective listening skills.
4. Promote teamwork in the clinical setting.
5. Complete dictations and chart notes in a legible & timely manner.

Professionalism
1. Demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to age, culture, disability and gender of patients and colleagues.
2. Consider effects of personal, social and cultural factors in the disease process and patient management.
3. Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, integrity and honesty in all interactions with patients and colleagues.

1. Demonstrate skill in supervising junior residents and medical students in information gathering, decision-making, and patient management.

3. Use information technology to appraise & assimilate evidence from scientific studies to enhance patient care outcomes.

1. Summarize the physician’s role in advocating for patient care needs
2. Summarize the physician’s role in disease management across various levels of the health care system in a cost effective manner.
3. Demonstrate how to access various community resources on behalf of the patient.
