Dr. Mary Nyangweso


Dr. Mary NyangwesoDr. Mary Nyangweso is the J. Woolard and Helen Peel distinguished professor in Religious Studies at East Carolina University (Greenville, North Carolina).

She received the B. Ed (Education, Kiswahili and Religion) at Kenyatta University, Nairobi Kenya; the M. Phil (Religion) at Moi University, Eldoret, Kenya; the M. Th Theology at Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia; and the M. Phil and PhD (Sociology of Religion) at Drew University.

Mary has taught courses including Introduction to Religion, Women and religion, World Religions, Classical Islam, Religions of Africa, Indigenous Religions, and more.

Dr. Nyangweso is a human rights activist and educator on issues that affect women, especially in the area of religion. She has received many other honors including a Fulbright Award.
