The National Association of Counties (NACo) recently featured one of RENCI at ECU’s visualization projects in their newsletter "County News." The article focuses on the use of CanVis, a free visualization tool provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agroforestry Center.

One of the projects detailed is wind farm visualization, a project that also appeared in RENCI at ECU’s recent Visualization Challenge 2009. Dr. Tom Allen and graduate student Laurynas Gedminas are developing a survey to measure the economic and aesthetic impact wind farms would have on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The survey will include visualizations of hypothetical wind farms created by combining photographs of real-life locations with embedded models of wind turbines shown at various proposed distances from the shoreline. In addition, the team is working on animated 3D models that can be imported into Google Earth for use in future surveys.
