Nearly 72% of the land area in the United
States, comprised of 1,976 counties, is rural.
Rural America produces the majority of
affordable food and energy, contains the
minerals and metals used in manufacturing,
supplies clean drinking water, and provides
the most opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Rural America's population is aging as younger
generations leave for better economic
opportunities in cities. At the same time,
rural health and education continue to lag
behind urban centers. Rural America is facing
unprecedented stress and decline that puts the
security and prosperity of our nation at risk.
Eastern North Carolina faces even
greater challenges, compared to
the rest of the United States.
