Purpose and Responsibilities of the Leadership Team


The purpose of the Leadership Team is to:

  • Guide ECU's activities associated with the reaffirmation of its accreditation by SACS in 2013
  • Manage and validate the internal institutional assessment of compliance with all Core Requirements and Comprehensive Standards and to develop the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).

The responsibilities of the Leadership Team include:

  • Approving the structure and timelines for the internal review process
  • Appointing the committees and work teams as needed to prepare the Compliance Certification and QEP
  • Ensuring that these teams receive appropriate staff and research support
  • Overseeing the institutional review of the extent of compliance with the Principles of Accreditation and the documentation of evidence supporting the extent of compliance
  • Ensuring that the institution is engaged in the review process and is informed of the progress of the review
  • Reviewing and approving the Compliance Certification and the QEP
  • Organizing the on-site visit in Spring 2013
  • Ensuring that appropriate follow-up activities are in place to address compliance issues and to monitor the successful implementation and progress of the QEP

SACS Guidelines for structure of the Leadership Team


SACS has provided a description of the role of the Chief Executive Officer in the institutional internal review process, the first of which is to appoint a leadership team consisting of creative thinkers and strong communicators. The new Principles also require that each institution appoint an Accreditation Liaison.

The Leadership Team is charged with spearheading the institution's internal review and directing the teams established to conduct the internal review, including Compliance Certification and the development of the QEP. The particular structure recommended by SACS is:

  • President
  • SACS Accreditation Liaison
  • Provost
  • Faculty Member
  • Person who directs planning and evaluation

SACS emphasizes the need to keep this team small.
