Current Activities

Design Associates/AIGA student chapter
Design Associates or (DA) is the ECU student guild that promotes the interests of Graphic Design and Illustration. Student members join DA for a nominal fee and activities include guest lecturers and trips. DA has enhanced student learning in numerous ways such as bringing nationally recognized individuals to lecture and attending professional events sponsored by local groups such as AIGA/Raleigh. DA is student run and relies on student involvement and leadership to maximize its potential as a resource.

Visual Arts Forum
This school-wide organization seeks to establish communication among the various disciplines and their students in the School of Art and Design. VAF is the umbrella funding source for the student guilds such as Design Associates. Student participation is vital and encouraged.

Scholarships & Awards
Each year students may submit materials in order to be considered for a number of scholarships, some of which are specific to areas or level of student. Information packages are made available in the Media Center when it is time to submit applications. All students are urged to apply.

Exhibition Opportunities/Competitions
Illustration students are encouraged to submit their best work into competitive venues. One such venue is the Undergraduate Student Exhibition. Annually the School of Art & Design’s Gray Gallery sponsors a juried undergraduate exhibition. Faculty in each concentration in the school juries student work into the show and an outside juror is invited in to select work for discipline-specific and exhibition-wide awards. Another competitive venue that illustration students are encouraged to participate in is The Rebel, ECU’s campus literary magazine’s annual competition. Work is juried in for an exhibition with awards and then publication in the annually produced publication.

Additional juried venues that illustration students are encouraged to put their work into are: the annual Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Competition and CMYK Magazine’s and 3 x 3 Magazine’s annual student illustration competitions.
