Students are encouraged to become member in textile specific organizations and subscribe to various publications in their area of expertise. Some of the sources include:
Surface Design Association (SDA)
This organization publishes the “Surface Design Journal” which is printed four times a year. The organization holds a conference every other year in May/June. There is student membership and the group offers many opportunities for exhibition, grants and awards. Membership is highly recommended for anyone interested in textiles.
The Handweavers Guild of America
Publishes “Shuttle, Spindle and Dyepot”. This organization also sponsors a major conference, which is located in a different location every other year. Members have opportunities for grants, awards and exhibition and workshops. An excellent resource for all textile artists and membership is highly encouraged.
QSDS – The Quilt Surface Design Symposium
This organization sponsors an annual symposium each year in Columbus, Ohio in June and brings textile artists from all over the world to conduct lectures and workshops. Its student base is also international and it is a unique opportunity for further study in the textile arts.
