Terry Smith

My work, my desire to make things, is not about being a woodworker, but being an artist and manipulating the material in anyway that I can.  Whether a piece is utilitarian or simply an object to look at, I make it as a way to speak to others about something I find beautiful.

My woodwork is in numerous private collections as well as the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Museum and the North Carolina Museum of History.  I have been a frequent workshop teacher at such prestigious schools as Haystack, Penland School of Crafts and Peters Valley.  My work is primarily functional and encompasses a broad range of architectural furnishings and decorative accessories.  I continues to pursue my on going interest in stringed musical instruments of the Renaissance and Baroque periods with special emphasis on the violin. My most recent work also includes guitars.
