Jones Hall was dedicated for Dr. Paul Erastus Jones, a local dentist who helped establish the ECU medical school. At its dedication in 1960, Jones Hall loomed as both the tallest building in Greenville and the first on The Hill. Jones Hall was renovated in 2002 which added floor lounges and an elevator, as well as public areas on the main floor.

This facility provides additional beds to College Hill using the suite-style community format. There is 1 bathroom per 2 beds, as well as a full-size refrigerator and microwave in a kitchenette set-up. This building is designed to foster a learning environment outside of main campus and the classroom buildings. This hall provides options for upper division students and it popular with returning and transfer students.

Tyler Hall opened as a men’s residence in 1969, but switched to all women in 1972 and remained so for nearly 30 years. Today, it is a coed residence hall. This original Hill high-rise garnered its name from Arthur Lynwood Tyler, a former University Trustee. The building was renovated in 2012- opening with two new restrooms on each floor, a new exterior, and new finishes in public areas and student rooms.
Note with the renovation, Tyler Hall now has only one window, with the exception of corner rooms.

In 1957, the East Carolina University President dedicated Garrett Hall in honor of Radford “Ralph” Marvin Garrett, a university Trustee. This residence hall originally housed all women, then became co-ed, switched to all men, then all female again, and finally settled on its current co-ed status. Garrett Hall currently houses several of our Living Learning Programs.

Clement Hall received its name in 1972 after Sarah E. Clement, a teacher from 1920 to 1960, who developed a grant for the East Carolina University student loan fund. The hall currently houses men and women.
ECU community members paid tribute to Ruth Allen White in 1969 by naming White Hall after her. She graduated from East Carolina Teachers College (which became East Carolina University) in 1925. Miss White continued her life at the university, first as a hall counselor, then the Assistant Dean of Women and finally as the Dean of Women.
Since 1969, Greene Hall of the West Neighborhood has had the name Greene after Mary Hemphill Greene. Miss Greene became one of five English professors at ECU in 1928. She died tragically in a house fire in January of 1968, months before her planned summer retirement.
Completed in 1964 in the West Neighborhood, Fletcher Hall stood as the first high-rise building on campus. Fletcher received its name after Inglis Fletcher, who wrote 12 historic novels on North Carolina. Fletcher Hall bathrooms were completely renovated in 2011.

Living Learning Communities (LLCs) were created to provide students with the opportunity to experience the transition to a larger university in smaller, more personal groups. They are designed to assist in the academic transition to university instruction, to support the student-faculty interaction beyond the classroom, and to encourage positive student connections within East Carolina University. Students that reside in a learning community take at least two classes together in the Fall semester. Research shows that students that reside in these special living communities tend to have higher grade point averages than other students, and their retention rate towards graduation from the university is much higher than students living in other living situations.

Four of our Residence Halls within Campus Living, will host our LLCs for the upcoming academic year. The bulk of our LLC programs will be housed in our newly constructed Gateway Hall in the College Hill Neighborhood. Campus Living is very excited about this new building that opened in the Fall of 2015 and its various characteristics that support Living-Learning Communities, making it a unique and special place to live. The other three buildings housing LLCs are Garrett Hall in the West End Neighborhood, Umstead Hall considered a part of the Central Campus Neighborhood, and Jarvis Hall also a part of the Central Campus Neighborhood.
Gateway is our newest Residence Hall, opened in August 2015 with three different room styles, great community living room space throughout the building, classrooms on the first level, the College Hill Neighborhood Service Office, laptop hook-in areas, and basketball and sand volleyball courts. Gateway will be an exciting and new living adventure for our students. The LLCs who will be hosted in Gateway include: Honors College, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, Kinesiology, Education, Future Pirate Nurse, Wellness, Quest Transfer Student, Music, Dance, Camp P.I.R.A.T.E.S., and Athletics. Gateway will be the hub for our LLC programs as it was specifically designed with our LLCs in mind. The Engineering LLC is housed in Umstead Hall which is centrally located near several classroom buildings, Joyner Library, engineering faculty and advising offices, dining facilities, Mendenhall Student Center, the Pirate Tutoring Center, and administrative buildings. This location allows for ease of access to student services, getting to class, meeting with faculty or advisors, or grabbing a quick cup of coffee. Students living in the ELC appreciate the convenience of living near it all!
Historic Jarvis Hall houses our Jarvis Leadership program. Jarvis Hall was renovated in 2000 and is centrally located. It is one of our smaller halls, housing about 125 students. Jarvis is centrally located allowing for easy access to academic buildings and student services. Being our oldest Residence Hall Jarvis has a lot of character and a beautiful lobby, prime for some great hall events.
In 2017, Garrett will be host to the Business and Art + Design LLC students. Garrett is conveniently located next door to the Jenkins Fine Arts Center where many of the Art and Design classes are held. It is in close walking distance to Bate Building - home to the College of Business. It is considered to be part of the West End of campus and is close to West End Dining Center, Student Recreation Center, Mendenhall Student Center, and Joyner Library.
Applying for a Living-Learning Community program at ECU is a two pronged process. You must complete your Campus Living Housing contract as well as whatever application/process you need to complete for the Living-Learning Community, as it varies by LLC.
For the Campus Living Housing contract, once you have been accepted to ECU, an admittance packet and your ECU e-mail account details will be mailed to you. This account and password will give you access to the Pirate Port web site for the contracting process. The Campus Living contracting process for new students is available online after paying the ECU enrollment deposit, by using the link on the student's Pirate Port account - https://pirateport.ecu.edu. The link is located under Tools and then the Student Affairs section. Select Campus Living-Housing and proceed to the sign-up site. New students will pay by credit card the $100 application fee and the $100 Advanced Room fee (credited towards Spring semester room charges).

Students accepted for admission to East Carolina University are not automatically accepted into the Engineering program. Students wishing to pursue the Engineering major must submit a supplemental application to the Department of Engineering to be considered for acceptance into the major. Incoming students that have applied and been accepted into the Engineering programs will have an Engineering Learning Community application sent to them in their acceptance packet from the Department of Engineering. The Anchors Living Learning Community gives first generation college students a unique residential learning experience designed to support transition from high school to East Carolina University. Through Anchors, participants will enroll in courses designed to assist new students in being successful in their first year of college and beyond. Anchors creates a community for students through interactive academic, co-curricular, and social activities. Beginning two-weeks prior to the fall semester and continuing through the first year, Anchors residents will enjoy the typical advantages of living on campus with the added benefit of proactive, structured academic support.
Anchors aims to provide participating students with dedicated support in the transition from high school into a large university community. This program anchors students to campus resources and establishes positive habits that lead to success in college. With this focused start of their academic journey, Anchors students strive to be more prepared for their first year of college.

Our Hall Governments
governments provide students in each hall a connection between the
Residence Hall Association and their respective hall. At least one
Resident Assistant and the Hall Coordinator advise each Hall government.
The advisors merely give feedback; otherwise the government is fully
run by the students that have been elected by the other residence in the
halls. Each hall government is composed of six positions that are
outlined in the RHA constitution as: president, vice president, business
manager, treasurer, and two RHA representatives. The hall coordinator
may add other positions as see fit for the success of that particular
hall government. The ultimate goal of the hall government is to have
students be the voice of their peers and to help RHA in providing a fun
living environment on the campus of ECU.
RHA (Resident Hall Association)Residence
Hall Association, RHA, is the student run organization that represents
all students that live on campus. The purpose of RHA is to make sure
that the students have a prominent voice on the campus and to provide an
enriched living experience full of social, educational, and service
opportunities throughout the academic year. The duty of the RHA
representatives from each hall is to express the concerns of the
students from that hall and to serve as the messenger to RHA from the
halls. RHA consists of an executive board, a general assembly, and the
general body. The executive board is advised by an Assistant Director of
Campus Living and a Graduate Assistant that resides in a residence
hall. Six students that previously held positions in their hall
government form the executive board; that also still live on campus. The
six positions consist of a president, vice president, business manager,
parliamentarian, national communications coordinator, and marketing

The first merit based residential scholarship program established on the East Carolina campus. Founded to reward and encourage students to become active members of their campus and local community and to expose students to the leadership journey that others have taken. The first scholarship program to envision and implement a strategic program of involvements with campus and community leaders to mentor and share their life experiences. Established in 2010 and inspired by the desire to create and improve the leadership and community involvement experiences of ECU students, the Residential Scholar Program provides an undergraduate experience unlike any other.
An award of $3,000 per year to be used to support a student's undergraduate on campus housing expenses. The program encourages your involvement with a vibrant group of like-minded students. Provides access to experienced mentors to introduce passion and potential to a world of opportunity. Exclusive monthly enrichment and networking opportunities with campus and community leaders. Opportunities to apply for Campus Living funded grants to create community and campus initiatives.
