Welcome back for the fall semester!  I am writing to you to request your assistance with aiding our students in making a successful return to the University this year.  Most every campus in the country, ECU’s campus included, has seen a significant increase in the number of students experiencing immense difficulty coping with the stress of college life.  Our students bring to campus with them any combination of personal, financial, physical, psychological, social and emotional stressors.  Today’s students seem to lack the resiliency needed to manage such stressors while maintaining the effort and focus necessary for a rigorous academic setting such as ours.   For an individual student, these stressors – without the appropriate coping strategies and support systems in place – can evolve into barriers to academic success. Below are a series of individual PowerPoint slides, each labeled by a particular topic area and a particular week within the semester.

Staff from ECU’s Center for Counseling and Student Development used their expertise and national best practices to identify the topic areas chosen and the proper timing to address these topics during the course of the fall semester.  Each week’s attachment has 2 slides of information and resources.

We understand the importance of time in each class and offer an option that could empower our students with information and resources without encroaching into your instructional time.  A great way to share this information each week would be as students are entering the classroom, you could have one of the two slides for that given week up on the projector screen.   For the first meeting date of the week, have the first slide up on screen; for the second meeting date of the week, have the second slide up, for example.

Our hope is that as students are talking to one another, checking their phones and waiting for class to begin, they will see these resources and tips in front of them and – if the topic resonates with them – they will take notice.  Feel free to utilize these resources however you see best for your course.  For online classes, please feel free to post the slides as you deem most appropriate.

If you choose not to utilize this resource, that is entirely up to you as the faculty member.  However, we hope that by sharing this information with your students, we can help to make this year a successful one for our student body.
