FX: The First-Year Experience
The First-Year Experience ensures a great start to your college career at East Carolina University and provides academic support and guidance. When you choose to live in the First-Year Experience community, you are choosing to live with other first-year students and have access to programs designed to help you choose a major, manage your time, manage stress and sharpen your study and test taking skills.
The First-Year Experience (FX) living environment is designed to assist first-year students in succeeding academically and socially as they make the transition to college life. Students who participate in FX benefit from a number of experiences offered throughout the program.
The Academic Experience
FX students live among fellow students attending the same classes, making it easier to form study groups and walk back and forth to class together. FX, like similar supportive living environments, has been shown to help students perform better academically compared to students who do not live in these types of environments during their first year of college.
The Program Experience
Students who choose FX have access to student staff and professional staff who are not only available to answer questions, but who also plan activities that range from intramural sports to video game tournaments and community service activities. FX also offers programs that are educational in nature to help first-year students understand their roles and responsibilities as members of East Carolina University.
The Social Experience
FX provides an environment where you live with other first-year students who share the experience with you, making it easier for you to meet and form lasting friendships. FX also hosts the Night Life series, a programming series that offers monthly large scale events. With a variety of activities presented, FX students get to know one another and build lasting relationships.
The Living Experience
FX is located in residence halls on West Campus and on College Hill with amenities such as close proximity to dining halls and classroom buildings. All the activities and events planned for FX are created with the needs of first-year students in mind.
New Student Priority Application Deadline is May 1, 2009.

Finding Opportunities to Connect Undergraduates with Service
In collaboration with the Volunteer and Service-Learning Center, Campus Living founded the F.O.C.U.S. program in 2004 to encourage students to develop civic responsibility in preparation for living in our world. During the 2008-2009 academic year, students in the F.O.C.U.S. program will be housed in Jones Halls. The F.O.C.U.S. community will work to plan and implement programs in the Greenville community and beyond. Programs from the past include: Operation Move-In, College Hill Clean Up, Alex’s Lemonade Stand, volunteering at the Food Bank, and working with the Little Willie Center (an after-school program). In addition, students have participated in clothing drives, food drives, and toiletry drives to assist the Greenville community.
F.O.C.U.S. is a living, learning, and serving opportunity with the following goals:
• Cultivate a commitment to service.
• Raise awareness of social issues by exposing students to a variety of service opportunities.
• Nurture civic responsibility.
• Develop common bonds between students with diverse backgrounds.
