Programs to Enhance the On Campus Experience

Campus Living offers a wide range of programs and activities in all of our halls.  These programs enhance the educational experience at East Carolina University by offering opportunities to learn and grow outside the classroom.  In addition, we offer more focused educational programs in some of our halls, to add to the campus educational experience in specific area.  All of these programs are based in a specific hall or halls. Some of these programs are based on Academic Major and are selected by being part of specific majors or programs, and other programs are have a separate application process.

If a student chooses to apply to these programs, the application or admittance to a program will override some of their housing preferences listed on their Campus Living Contract, such as Neighborhood Preference.

If a student applies to a learning community and requests a roommate, the learning community request will override the roommate request in some cases.  Roommates are only assigned together in learning communities if both are accepted into the same learning community and/or bed space is available to complete the request.  Roommate requests must be mutual and submitted by April 15, 2012 to be considered.  Application to a community does not guarantee an assignment to a specific hall or learning community.

 FX:  The First-Year Experience

The First-Year Experience ensures a great start to your college career at East Carolina University and provides academic support and guidance.  When you choose to live in the First-Year Experience community, you are choosing to live with other first-year students and have access to programs designed to help you choose a major, manage your time, manage stress and sharpen your study and test taking skills.

The First-Year Experience (FX) living environment is designed to assist first-year students in succeeding academically and socially as they make the transition to college life.  Students who participate in FX benefit from a number of experiences offered throughout the program.

The Academic Experience

FX students live among fellow students attending the same classes, making it easier to form study groups and walk back and forth to class together.  FX, like similar supportive living environments, has been shown to help students perform better academically compared to students who do not live in these types of environments during their first year of college.

The Program Experience

Students who choose FX have access to student staff and professional staff who are not only available to answer questions, but who also plan activities that range from intramural sports to video game tournaments and community service activities.  FX also offers programs that are educational in nature to help first-year students understand their roles and responsibilities as members of East Carolina University.

The Social Experience

FX provides an environment where you live with other first-year students who share the experience with you, making it easier for you to meet and form lasting friendships.  FX also hosts the Night Life series, a programming series that offers monthly large scale events.  With a variety of activities presented, FX students get to know one another and build lasting relationships.

The Living Experience

FX is located in residence halls on West Campus and on College Hill with amenities such as close proximity to dining halls and classroom buildings.  All the activities and events planned for FX are created with the needs of first-year students in mind.

Academic Department Based Communities

Engineering Learning Community (ELC)

The focus and mission of the engineering learning community (ELC) is to bring together engineering students in a residential environment that provides encouragement and support which lead to success in pursuit of an engineering degree.  This is accomplished by integrating the academic and residential life of the participants with special activities to teach strategies and skills for academic success, professional growth, and personal development.

Students within the ELC will be block scheduled in similar classes during their first semester at ECU.  This, along with student-lead tutoring, ensures that students will have a large network of peers from which to form study groups to ensure academic success.  Guest speakers, teamwork and leadership exercises, service learning events, and other activities throughout the year ensure that all students are focused on professional development as well.  Our students come from diverse backgrounds, thus ensuring that each student will be exposed to cultures and ideas that will enhance personal development.  The ELC provides students with the opportunity to grow academically, professionally, and personally in their quest to become an engineer.

UPDATE: The ELC is located for 2011-2012 in Umstead Hall on the Central Neighborhood of campus.
