 Academic Conduct Process

If a faculty member suspects a student may have violated the Academic Integrity policy at ECU, the faculty will contact the student to schedule a meeting, referred to as a primary interview.  The primary interview must take place within three class days of the alleged violation being detected.

During the primary interview the faculty member will explain to the student the violation they believe occurred and show any information they believe supports their suspicion.  The student then has the opportunity to respond to the allegations and present information that support their response.  The faculty member and the student each have a right to have a nonparticipating observer at the interview.

After hearing the student, the faculty member may either dismiss the charge or find it supported on the basis of the evidence. If supported, the faculty member may record a failing grade in the course or some portion thereof or take other appropriate action. After completion of the primary interview and on the basis of the information presented, if the faculty member believes that a failing grade in the course(s) is inadequate disciplinary action, the faculty member may refer the entire case to the Academic Integrity Board for appropriate action. The Academic Integrity Board will hear the entire case without regard to the findings made or any disciplinary action taken by the faculty member.

A student may appeal the decision made by the faculty person if the student believes the sanction is too severe and/or the student believes that the decision of the faculty member is not supported by the information presented.  The appeal must be submitted to OSSR within five class days of notification of the decision by the faculty person.
