Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Sponsorship

Persons wishing to attend the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program who are not employed by a law enforcement agency must obtain sponsorship from a law enforcement agency in order to be accepted into the program.

Sponsorship by the ECU Police Department consists of the following criteria:

  • Only current or recently graduated ECU Criminal Justice students will be considered for BLET sponsorship.

  • The BLET program must be administered through a local community college. The colleges in this area which typically present BLET programs are Pitt Community CollegeWilson Community College, Martin Community College, and Beaufort Community College. Classes are usually held during the spring and fall semesters. Persons interested in attending a BLET program should first contact the community college of their choice to obtain additional information before seeking sponsorship from ECU Police Department.

  • A background investigation will be completed by the ECU Police Department to determine if the applicant meets the minimum qualifications for certification as a law enforcement officer in the State of North Carolina.  A background check is conducted on all applicants who are considered for BLET sponsorship. This may include a criminal records check, interview of references and employers, or any other method deemed necessary to determine the applicant’s suitability for BLET sponsorship.

  • The ECU Police Department will not provide any financial assistance to the applicant. However, the tuition fee for the BLET program is generally waived by the community college upon sponsorship.

  • The ECU Police Department will not provide equipment, uniform items, or vehicles to the applicant for the purpose of BLET.

  • The ECU Police Department is under no obligation to employ the applicant once the applicant completes the program and the applicant is under no obligation to work for the ECU Police Department.

  • BLET sponsorship is not guaranteed. The Chief of Police, or his/her designee, will make the final decision to approve or deny an applicant for BLET sponsorship. If approved, the Chief of Police, or his/her designee, reserves the right to withdraw approval of any student, at any time, and for any reason.

  • Upon approval by the Chief of Police, the ECU Police Department will extend a letter of sponsorship to the applicant and to the Director of the BLET program of the applicant's choice.

  • Persons interested in sponsorship must allow a minimum of 6 weeks prior to the start of the BLET program to allow sufficient time for processing.
