Sexually Transmitted Infections/HIV
Sexually transmitted infections pass from one person to another through sexual contact (vaginal, anal, and oral sex, and genital to genital contact). The most common sexually transmitted infections are chlamydia, trichomonas, gonorrhea, genital herpes, and human papilloma virus (HPV), the virus that causes genital warts. Syphilis, Hepatitis B, HIV and other infections are also concerns for sexually active people.
Sypmtoms: Sexually transmitted infections can be present without ANY symptoms.
Testing: The only way to know for sure if you have an infection is to be tested. Testing is available at the ECU Student Health Service. You can call 328-6841 to set up an appointment for confidential screening.
While the thought of being tested may be intimidating, it is important to be diagnosed so that proper treatment can be taken to cure or maintain these infections and to minimize the potential for permanent damage.
Prevention: Reduce your risk of transmission by practicing abstinence, being mutually monogamous, talking to your partner(s) about STI's, and using latex or polyurethane condoms and dental dams during vaginal, anal, and oral sex.
Note: Sexually transmitted infections CAN be passed through oral sex.
