Allergy Clinic
For students on allergy immunotherapy, Student Health Service provides a nurse to administer your regularly scheduled allergy medications. We operate under specific instructions for administration of allergy serum provided by your allergist’s office. Students must provide allergy serum and instructions for administration to SHS.
Please Note: Student Health Services does not have an allergist on staff. Serum Antigens are administered as mixed by your allergist. SHS does not alter premixed vials.
In Order for Student Health to Administer Your Allergy Injections:
- Contact your allergist and request them to provide you with instructions and serum in order for SHS to administer your allergy injections.
- Schedule an appointment by calling the appointment desk at (252)328-6841. Please be aware that initial appointment may take longer due to nursing assessment and reviewing of policies and consent.
- Students may drop off allergy serum and instructions for administration at anytime before your first scheduled appointment.
Please note: Dropping off your allergy serum as early as possible allows the nurse time to review your allergist’s instructions.
We do not accept allergy serum by mail. Serum must be hand-delivered by the student to Student Health Service.
- You may make set appointments by the week, month, or semester after your first initial visit with nurse and according to your allergist’s instructions.
Instructions for Students Receiving Allergy Injections:
- Avoid wearing tight sleeves on day of injection.
- Avoid strenuous exercise and use of alcohol at least 6 hours after injection.
- Students on wasp or bee vaccine must be well adjusted and on a maintenance dose. Student Health Service will not administer first time use or first time dose changes of wasp or bee vaccine.
- Students must wait 30 minutes after injection in order for the nurse to check the injection site and note local skin reactions or possible adverse reactions.
Students who do not abide by that policy may not be able to continue receiving immunotherapy
- The student is responsible for ordering their allergy serum when needed and for bringing it to SHS for storage.
