How do emergency contraceptive pills work? Emergency contraceptive pills keep a pregnancy from occurring by:

  • Inhibiting ovulation (release of an egg)
  • Inhibiting a fertilized egg from implanting into the uterus
  • Interfering with the process of the fertilized egg passing through the fallopian tubes.

Emergency contraception is not the same thing as an abortion. The method works before a woman is pregnant.

If you are an ECU Student and 16 or younger the Emergency Contraception medication is available after an appointment with an ECU Student Health Provider.
