Women's Health: Contraception Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a Prescription for a new Contraceptive product from Student Health Service? If you are an ECU student, our providers can write a prescription for these products after a PAP smear/pelvic exam and a one time completion of our Health Issues class offered by our Wellness Education department. The class is offered through the Internet www.ecu.edu/wellnessed/cessation.htm For more information concerning how to obtain a prescription for a new Contraceptive product please visit our Resources page and Wellness Education brochure The Pill Process.
I need a new Prescription for a Contraceptive product from Student Health Service but I have had a recent PAP? If you are an ECU student and you have had a recent PAP smear/pelvic exam and did not receive a prescription from an outside medical provider office but need a prescription for a Contraceptive product we will need to get a copy of your last PAP smear/pelvic exam. You may come in during business hours and ask the front desk to fax a medical release to your medical provider's office, or you may contact your medical provider directly and make arrangements to get a copy of your last PAP smear/pelvic exam. When we receive these records you will need to schedule an appointment with a provider in order to get a prescription. You will not need another PAP smear/pelvic exam with a Student Health Provider unless your provider or last exam indicates a need for one. You will however need to complete the Health Issues class on-line.
How do I get my Contraceptive product at the Student Health Pharmacy if I have a new prescription from another medical provider office? Just bring in the new prescription and we will gladly fill the medication if we carry it. Some manufacturer and or insurance restrictions regarding quantities may limit your purchase to a 3 month supply of medication per 90 days. Due to limitations of budget and space we cannot carry every Contraceptive product available.
I currently have a prescription for a Contraceptive product with refills on it at another pharmacy, how do I get my medication through the Student Health Service Pharmacy? If your current prescription is a medication we carry and has valid refills still available, we can call and transfer that prescription to our pharmacy department. Please call us in advance and give us your name, birth date, medication name, and the pharmacy's phone number that has previously filled your prescription. It is also helpful to have yourprescription number for that medication.

What are Contract Prices such as contract priced birth control pills? Certain manufacturers provide us with lower than usual prices for certain medications. These medications are intended to be sold only to students without insurance and are sold at a lower cost to help students afford otherwise high priced medications. Manufacturers can choose at anytime to discontinue this special pricing for their products which forces us to purchase the products through normal distribution warehouses at usually a higher price.
Why does my birth control pill cost a higher price than my roommate's who uses a different brand of pill? Some medication brands are available on a reduced or contracted price, while others are not. The medication manufacturer determines the pricing and may provide a lower cost product for students who don't have insurance. These special "contract price" items are very typical from birth control manufacturers but are not available for every birth control product. These prices are only available to ECU students, without insurance. Please check with the pharmacy concerning a price for your specific medication and please identify yourself as a student or ECU employee to obtain the correct price quote.
If I send my prescription bill or Student Health bill to my account at the cashier's office, will my parents be able to see what medicine I am taking? No, the charge shows up as a pharmacy or student health charge only and does not list the medication name, diagnosis, or any other personal information regarding your visit.
