This
zine is the final project for the Spring 2002 Senior Seminar in Women's
Studies. It documents the work and knowledge of women's studies students,
offers links to local and national organizations, and educates the ECU
community about women's issues. Just as feminism itself is constantly
evolving, this website serves as a template, to be added to, altered, and
improved by future women's studies students here at ECU.
Throughout the semester, we have explored what it means to do feminist work in the 21st century. Our readings focused on issues like multiculturalism, questions of representation, and cross-cultural women's issues. The tension between multiculturalism and feminism was brought to light. We discussed the effects of colonialism on individual women's lives, something that is often left out of history books. Through writers like Alice Notley, we saw how traditionally male art forms, like the epic poem, can be re-envisioned for a feminist consciousness. What does it mean to participate in a global feminism that seeks to create equality within and across national boundaries? We approached this question--without ever completely answering it--through close reading exercises, class discussion, and extensive writing. |
