University Writing Program

In 1992, East Carolina University made a major commitment to student literacy by approving a Program in Writing Across the Curriculum. In 1999, WAC and the new University Writing Center came under the jurisdiction of Academic Affairs in a consolidated program called the University Writing Program. The goal of the University Writing Program is to provide instruction in the kinds of writing students can expect to do on the job and to provide support for that instruction.

To that end, nearly 300 Writing Intensive (WI) courses have been approved since the WAC Program's inception. And the University Writing Center now has several sites around campus, including the Hub in the Bate Building and a site in each building on campus where WI courses are taught.

What's more, the University Writing Program has developed instructional programs at the School of Medicine (School of Medicine Writing Program) and for all graduate programs (GRAD 6665). An Online Writing Lab has also been developed to provide writing consultations for students who take Distance Education courses.

The University Writing Program, a program supported by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, is housed in Old Cafeteria Complex, room 2315.
