The Program in Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) at East Carolina University supports the University's Writing Intensive (WI) Course Requirement. The WI course requirement for every student who graduates from ECU is a 12-hour requirement, which includes Engl 1100, Engl 1200, and two more upper division WI courses. At least one of the upper division WI courses must be in the student's major.
The WAC Program oversees all WI courses. All WI courses must be granted that status by the cross-disciplinary WAC Committee. Such courses must follow one of the approved models for WI courses.
The Director of the University Writing Program is in charge of administering both the WAC program and the University Writing Center. While the Department of English houses and provides support for Engl 1100 and 1200, the University Writing Program, housed in Academic Affairs, oversees all WI operations including course approval, faculty training, writing consultant training, and development of additional programs, such as the Online Writing Lab, School of Medicine Writing Program, and Graduate Writing Across the Disciplines Course (GRAD 6665).
