Our Mission

The East Carolina University Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Pirate Battalion recruits, retains, develops, and graduates leaders who are mentally, physically, emotionally, and morally ready to serve our Nation as commissioned officers in the United States Army. The program consists of a two-year basic course which is normally taken during the freshman and sophomore years in college. The basic course is followed by a two-year advanced course which includes a 32 day summer camp prior to the final year. The “Pirate Way” consists of helping our Cadets achieve their personal goals by utilizing the following leadership training and development settings and methods:

  • Dynamic Classroom Instruction
  • Tactical And Garrison Leadership Labs
  • Field Training Exercises (Ftx’s)
  • Physical Fitness Training (Pt)
  • Mentoring And Role Modeling

Additionally, we encourage our cadets to participate in some of the other leadership training and development opportunities available to them at ECU such as:

  • Extracurricular Activities – Color Guard, Cannon Team, Ranger Challenge Team, etc.
  • Cadet Professional Development Training – Airborne, Air Assault, Mountain Warfare, Northern Warfare, summer internship programs, etc.
  • Drill Cadet and Cadet Troop Leader Training Programs
  • Intramurals – The Pirate Battalion fields teams every season and gives Cadets multiple opportunity to participate and captain competitive, winning teams.

The end state is that the Pirate Battalion graduates leaders who are:

  • Selfless – Completely dedicated to serving their Nation
  • Caring – Completely committed to taking care of their Soldiers
  • Morally and Ethically Grounded – Men and women of integrity
  • Smart, Tough, and Physically Fit - Prepared for the demanding challenges of the modern battlefield
  • Disciplined, Decisive Decision-Makers
  • Mentally Quick and Agile – Able to plan and execute complex operations and adjust on the fly as necessary
  • Imbued with the Warrior Ethos – They will never quit, never accept defeat, never leave a fallen comrade behind, and they will ALWAYS accomplish the mission
