Italy Intensives

Summer 2019

The Summer 2019 application is now open. Applications will be accepted until the program fills. Once the program fills with students who have paid their deposit we will start a waiting list. Click here to apply.

This year we will offer only one 26-day program. Students from any major can take credits in fine arts foundation, humanities, and the required KINE 1000 fitness and health class as yoga.

The program cost is a wonderful value and includes travel all over Italy as well as time to explore and relax in the authentic medieval village of Certaldo Alto where students live in beautiful apartments and study in our ECU classrooms. We will begin the trip in Venice, discovering its romantic canals lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces, gondolas, and gorgeous cathedrals. After three days we will go by bus to our ECU campus in Certaldo, an authentic medieval village where students live in gorgeous furnished apartments and enjoy day trips to Pisa, San Gimignano, Volterra, Siena and over-night trips to Florence and the Cinque Terre coast.  Our final three days will be spent on the beautiful Amalfi Coast with one day to explore the ruins of Pompeii and climb to the top of Mount Vesuvius, and another to experience the dramatic coastal city of Positano with a boat ride to the village of Amalfi.  Don't miss it! This will be the trip of a lifetime!

Cost for one summer semester is $4,500.

Cost includes:
  • Tuition for up to 7 credits
  • Transportation to and from airports in Italy
  • Lodgings and utilities in beautiful apartments in Certaldo
  • Lodgings on all overnight trips
  • Health insurance while abroad on the program
  • Transportation on all school trips in Italy (boats, trains, buses)
  • Dinners on all class days (nearly every day)
  • Breakfast and dinners on overnight trips
  • Museum entrances and tours
  • 3 days in Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, and the Amalfi Coast
  • 3 days in Venice
  • 3 days in Cinque Terre with entrance to the Park and hiking trails
  • Day trips to San Gimignano, Volterra, Pisa, Siena
  • Overnight trip to Florence
Students budget for their own lunches and breakfasts in Certaldo. Our apartments have full kitchens available for cooking and grocery shopping can be done at the stores in Certaldo Basso. Apartments are completely furnished and also have washing machines. Grocery costs seem to be less expensive in Italy than in the USA and because students have kitchens additional costs are minimal. Students pay for their own lunches on trips. An estimate of out-of-pocket costs would be $300 (depending on purchases of souvenirs).

Airfare is not included in the program cost. Flights will be recommended by the program director and should not be booked until she has sent these suggestions. It is important that we arrive and depart at similar times to take advantage of provided transportation to and from the airports in Italy. Airfare is usually $1,000-$1,400 or possibly less. As soon as the program fills students will be sent information on booking flights.
