Lysistrata was written in 411 B.C. and first performed at a dramatic festival of Dionysus in Athens. In 411, the Greeks had been fighting a civil war, the Peloponnesian War, for twenty years. Aristophanes' play tells the story of how the women of Greece conspired to stop the war — by withholding sex from their husbands until they stopped fighting. Aristophanes is well-known for his obscene and coarse humor. Lysistrata, his most famous play, lives up to his vulgar reputation. And goes beyond it! Audiences are strongly advised that this play is not suitable for children. We regret that we can provide no reserved parking for off-campus guests. We have, however, made arrangements with ECU Parking Services that the permit requirement will be suspended for (1) the "A" parking lot immediately south of Mendenhall Student Center and Joyner Library and (2) the three "B" parking lots between Ninth and Tenth Streets between campus and Evans Street. Audience members may park in any of those lots without fear of ticketing beginning at 5:00 p.m. The referenced parking lots are labeled WC-8, WC-23, WC-27 and WC-28 on the map at left.
