East Carolina University Language Academy (ECULA)

The ECU Language Academy offers international students intensive English language training in preparation for entry into an undergraduate or graduate degree program at ECU.

Unlike many schools, ECULA offers an internal examination system, which frees students from the demands of standardized testing such as TOEFL or IELTS. Students who pass the ECULA Level 5 examination can apply directly to a degree program (undergraduate or graduate) at ECU.

Other features of ECULA include:
  • Friendly, patient and experienced instructors who all have master's degrees, or higher, plus years of teaching experience, both in the U.S. and overseas

  • A weekly pronunciation laboratory guided by professional speech pathologists from ECU's Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders

  • Classes on the beautiful main campus of East Carolina University

  • Opportunities to practice English every day

  • Accreditation from CEA, the Commission on English Language Accreditation, the leading accrediting organization for intensive English programs in the U.S.

  • First Friends program, partnering you with another international student for fun social activities

  • More than 20 hours per week of total classroom exposure to English

  • A weekly movie series

  • Field trips to fun, interesting places, such as parks, beaches, museums and art galleries

  • Access to all university facilities, including a state of the art recreation center

ECU is an academic leader in the southeast U.S., with several nationally recognized programs. ECU offers more than 100 undergraduate and 75 master's and doctoral programs, including schools of business, medicine, nursing and dentistry.

ECU is located in Greenville, North Carolina. Greenville is a friendly town one and a half hours from the international airport in Raleigh, and one and a half hours from the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean.
