Welcome to the Department of History at East Carolina University. The Department is home to over thirty full-time professors whose strengths include United States, European, Public, Military, Atlantic World, and Maritime History. The Department offers courses in the full range of international areas. At the undergraduate level the Department offers a BA in History and Minors in History and Public History. At the graduate level the Department offers MA degrees in History (concentrations in American, European, Military, Atlantic World, and Public History), and an MA in Maritime Studies.

WWII Project
WWII Undersea Mission

ECU's Program in Maritime Studies have begun work with the Department of Defense on a project they hope will give some peace of mind to U.S. military families who lost loved ones during World War II. Dr. Jennifer McKinnon and Dr. Jason Raupp, recently led a team to perform an underwater archaeological investigation of a U.S. Army Air Forces B-24H Liberator Heavy Bomber. The bomber, with its crew of 10, was shot down North of Rome, Italy in 1944.

Dr. Todd Bennett Wins Prestigious Award

ECU Associate Professor of History M. Todd Bennett has won a 2017-2018 NEH Public Scholar Award, the National Endowment for the Humanities announced recently. He is among just 28 recipients of this year’s prize, which supports well-researched books in the humanities aimed at a broad public audience. Bennett receives $50,400 in support of his ongoing book project, “Imagination Unlimited: Howard Hughes, the CIA, and the Untold Story Behind Their Hunt for a Sunken Soviet Submarine.”
